The media industry and brand advertisers are slowly catching on and making use of mobile advertising to increase market penetration. Mobile advertising has added support from applications like ringtones and pictures. Bluetooth advertising is also growing in popularity. New internet and wireless technologies have created immensely expanding arenas for advertising and entirely new techniques for marketing that were unheard of a decade ago. One such technique is called “proximity marketing,” which is based on the wireless technology of the Bluetooth.

A promotional Bluetooth is a listening device that is connected to a cell phone. However, once they receive the message on their promotional Bluetooth, the customer is already right there, and has little reason not to go into the establishment in question.

Proximity marketing is a brand new technique that is most ideally suited for shopping malls or downtown shopping districts, where many people gather and businesses are located very near to each other. Did you know that California will the 5th state (if you include District of Columbia) to pass the cell phone law? This will present a problem for most of us in California since we depend on it so much. The law was passed Fall of 2006 and will go into effect July 1, 2008. What exactly does the legislation entail? It prohibits the use of any hand-held mobile phones while driving. Drivers who are caught chatting away on their cellular phones will be fined $20 for the first offense and will receive $50 fines for any ensuing offense.

So what’s the solution? Well, the law does give room for mobile phone chatters to use hands free kits when talking on the phone. However, older cell phones tend to lack Bluetooth technology and thus rely primarily on wired handsfree kits that come standard with the purchase of most phones.

Of course, this complains may vary per brand and model-so be sure to try each one of them out, especially because there are a ton of companies now that make these.

Plug-N-Play Hands-Free Bluetooth Car Kit

These kits simply attaches to either the top of your dashboard, an air conditioning vent, or sometimes even your windshield. The plug’n'play Bluetooth kit is a device the size of your palm and usually gets power from your cigarette lighter. The palm-size kit contains both the microphone and a tiny loudspeaker. With this you don’t have to attach anything to your ear and is often loud enough to hear, even through traffic noise.

The disadvantage of plug and play kits, however, is its volume. Though they may be loud, there is no sense of privacy if you have other passengers in the vehicle. Another thing to keep in mind is the quality of the speakerphone built in the mounted kit. Some speakerphones tend to blare rather than sounding clear. This occurs when you overload a small speakerphone with a ton of volume, and this is quite common with this type of devices.

Because of advancements in Bluetooth technology, car audio companies began integrating Bluetooth technology in standard head units. This allows Bluetooth cell phones to be paired with the Bluetooth ready headunit. A phone call would mute whatever music or radio is playing and would channel the call through your vehicle’s sound system, resulting in the clearest sound from your phone. Depending on the kit, the microphone could be built in the headunit or wired (with hidden install of course) to the sunvisor. But just like the plug-n-play units, it offers no privacy since it could be heard by anyone in the vehicle.

This is probably the best solution for you if you are looking for a clean install without messy wires and if you feel uncomfortable putting something on your ear. It would also offer the best solution for you if you are looking for the best sound quality for a Bluetooth unit. If you want a built-in Bluetooth headunit, it will cost $200 or more. If you have an aftermarket stereo that is Bluetooth ready, you may just get the Bluetooth kit for that receiver. It is pricey though, costing you about $150 for just the Bluetooth interface.

My knowledge of Bluetooth has a gap tooth. Bluetooth is the ear thingy people wear that allows for hands-free, wireless use of their cell phones. Now you can run, drive, snowboard, even ride a motorcycle and never miss a call. Cell chatter is paramount and there is little patience for those, like myself, who bring up the rear of an inching glacier.

Without a cell phone, I am a lumbering Techno-saur, soon to stumble into a tar pit (if not outright pushed) for not adapting to evolution. I point to my mouth and grunt, “Uh! Uh!” and so to expand my vocabulary, I tentatively explore Bluetooth technology.

The beauty of Bluetooth is that it lets various devices by different manufacturers (or providers) “talk” to each other. Being “Bluetooth enabled” allows wireless use of cell phones, cameras, printers and other devices.)

On the phone front, simply put your cell phone in your pocket, pop on your Bluetooth ear thingy, and if your phone is “on,” voices will talk into your ear automatically. Look, Ma, no hands!

I’ve heard of long-toothed, houndstooth, even saber-toothed, but why is it called Bluetooth?

The name derives from King Harald Blatand of Denmark (910-986). Blatand or “Bluetooth,” comes from the Norse word, bla (blue), which also can mean dark or black. Methinks Vikings lacked good dental care.

But the Danish king’s claim to fame was that he united Denmark and Norway through Christianity in the 10th century. In fact an ancient Rune stone, located on a UNESCO world heritage site in Jelling, Denmark, translates to, “King Haraldr ordered this monument made in memory of Gormr, his father, and in memory of Thyrvé, his mother; that Haraldr who won for himself all of Denmark and Norway and made the Danes Christian.”

Imagine the corporate meeting the day the technology was officially named “Bluetooth.”

Perhaps a marketer said, “The connection is crystal clear. Harald Bluetooth brought together warring kingdoms, and our Bluetooth brings together different devices to work under one technology.”

And some underling, no doubt, yelped, “Yeah! And isn’t communication today’s higher power?”

Cell phone technology and a Danish Christian king – that’s quite a stretch. But then, what do computers have in common with an Apple? Oh, right, it’s a Genesis thing. (I made that up.)

But having what looks like a metal frog perched on my ear is ugly. Why is a Bluetooth so big when even devices for the hard-of-hearing are now barely noticeable?

I know why. Something has to separate hands-free cell phone users from Tourette Syndrome sufferers. A visual cue is needed because it’s harder to tell them apart. Thus, the sizable ear shield tells me that the lone person at the next table is actually sputtering and swearing at someone else.

But I always return to my natural instinct to resist owning a cell phone, never mind a Bluetooth.

I don’t want to be “more productive,” as in the ability to talk, eat and send something to the printer while standing at a burger counter.

I relish my “dream-time” while driving. (With the attention span of a kitten, so do I really need another distraction?)

Spending time and being present fully are precious gifts. I don’t want to join the legions of diners who sit across from each other, but talk to invisible parties.

Speaking of timing, I hate it when the momentum of somebody’s story (or worse, mine!) is interrupted by the almighty, “Oh, hold on a minute, I gotta get this.”

Yes, I know I could turn my cell phone off, but knowing myself, I never would. (Be happy – one less offender on the loose.)

To many, I’m stuck in the dark ages where Bluetooth remains a peaceable Norse king. Ah, the blessed silence!

Bluetooth proximity marketing is merely the next technological step for businesses to take if they want to really get their business advert out there. This is not only an incredible quick process but also very efficient. I would be surprised if by next year this time there are millions upon millions of people taking advantage of the immense benefits that come from Bluetooth proximity advertising! The Samsung SCH-a990 Mobile Phone represents the pinnacle of cell phone technology today. Camera

It has an auto focus feature, zoom, and plenty of imaging options. You can choose from five picture modes, three quality settings, and five resolutions (2,048×1,536, 1,600×1,200, 1,280×960, 1,024×768, and 800×600). You can adjust the brightness, white balance, color effects, and ISO settings. There’s also a multi shot mode and a self-timer, and you can change or turn off the shutter sound. Many of these options are also available to you in camcorder mode, although you get a choice of only two resolutions (320×240 and 176×144). You can capture up to an hour’s worth of video with sound.

Performance

Verizon’s network, and call quality was great. Speakerphone quality was just as good, and we had no problems pairing the handset with the Logitech Mobile Traveller Bluetooth headset. An integrated speakerphone that makes Samsung SCH A990 Mobile Phone easy to converse without touching the handset is a big plus point for car users. My first bluetooth headset was a Motorola. It always sort of flopped around on my ear no matter which of the three ear hooks I used. Sound quality was ok, but the headset itself was never comfortable. Because of the loose fit, I was always conscious that it was there and sub-consciously afraid that it would fall off.

Since that first headset, I have had several others. Until I purchased my Plantronics Voyager 510, I didn’t think there was a bluetooth headset that would fit snug and be comfortable. However, I can truly say that it is so comfortable, that after I have had it on for a few minutes, I sometimes forget that I’m even wearing it.

There have even been times that my phone has rang, I pulled it out of my holster to answer it, and banged it against my headset as I put it to my ear, because I forgot that I was wearing it!

The Plantronics Voyager is probably not the most sophisticated headset available. It is definitely not the smallest, and maybe not the best looking or least noticable. It is pretty good sized, with a boom microphone that comes half way down my cheek.

I don’t really care too much about the looks however because I’m not comfortable walking around in the grocery store, or the mall talking on a headset while people look at me, so I only wear it when I am driving. Because I only use it in my car, I don’t really care how big it is (as long as it is comfortable) or what it looks like.

But after owning several headsets, and being unhappy with fit and sound quality of most of the others, I really like my Plantronics Voyager. It has great sound quality, and people I am talking to on the other end don’t seem to know that I am on a headset. Another thing I like about it is the the talk time is huge. Six hours of power talking.

The only downside to the Voyager is the size of the on/off button. It is small and hard to press. The volume controls are ok. The off hook switch however is very well placed and easy to use.

At the manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $99, its definitely a little spendy. But if you shop around like I did, you can find it at half that price, which puts the Plantronics Voyager 510 bluetooth headset at one of the best values for a bluetooth headset for sure.

How would you feel if your PDA, your mobile phone, your mp3 player and almost everything else you connect to your computer could be wireless too? You’d like that? Bluetooth is wireless and automatic, and has a number of interesting features that can simplify our daily lives. Bluetooth is a standard developed by a group of electronics manufacturers that allows any sort of electronic equipment — from computers and cell phones to keyboards and headphones — to make its own connections, without wires, cables or any direct action from a user. Personal Area Network.

Using wireless networking with your personal gadgets is often called PAN, which stands for Personal Area Network. The idea is that, in the future, we’ll all have laptop computers with their batteries charged and no more need to connect any wires to them at all — you just place your Bluetooth device near the computer, and the computer sees it and can use it straightaway.

Bluetooth has been around and in-use since 1999, and it’s only getting more popular. It was designed to be secure, low cost, and easy to use from day one.

There are two classes of Bluetooth that are in popular use: class 1 and class 2. Class 2 is the most common and cheaper standard, allowing you to use a device that is up to 10 metres (32 feet) away. Class 1 is rarer, but you can still find devices that use it easily enough, and it has ten times the range: 100 metres or 320 feet.

How Does It Work?

Bluetooth is more flexible than 802.11 wireless networking, in exchange for the shorter range. Essentially, a Bluetooth-enabled computer has one Bluetooth receiver installed in it, and this receiver can then be used with up to 7 nearby Bluetooth devices. On the other end, wireless devices do not need to have Bluetooth installed if they support it — it is already integrated.

Like 802.11, Bluetooth works by using radio signals to create bandwidth. It is not, though, the same thing as an old-style wireless mouse or keyboard, which required a receiver to be plugged into one of your computers’ ports, and didn’t have range or stability anywhere near that of Bluetooth.

Many computers now come with built in Bluetooth, especially Apple Macs. If you want to add Bluetooth to a computer that doesn’t come with it pre-installed, you should probably use a USB to Bluetooth adapter, although internal Bluetooth devices to install in your computer are available. If you have a laptop and a spare PCMCIA slot, you can get Bluetooth cards for that too.

What Can You Do With Bluetooth?

Mobile phones with Bluetooth are very popular, and so are PDAs — the instant synchronisation of addresses and calendars to a computer is a useful feature. Other than that, almost anything that would usually use USB can be done using Bluetooth, including digital cameras, mp3 players, printers, and even mice and keyboards. If you take a look through the comprehensive list of Bluetooth ‘profiles’ (kinds of devices that could, in theory, be Bluetooth enabled), it includes cordless phones, faxes, headsets, and even video.

Basically, more than anything, Bluetooth is a replacement for USB: some say that while 802.11 wireless networking is wireless Ethernet, Bluetooth is wireless USB.

Not Just for Computers.

Part of the power of Bluetooth is that it isn’t just used to connect things to computers — it can be used to connect almost anything to anything else, if both things are Bluetooth-enabled and recognise each other.

Mobile phones, in particular, take advantage of this. Hands-free headsets often use Bluetooth to communicate with the phone. Some cars, for example, now have on-board computers that will connect with a Bluetooth phone and allow you to make hands-free calls, regardless of where the phone is in the car (even if you’ve left it in your bag in the trunk!)

On top of that, of course, Bluetooth devices can communicate with each other. This has led to some people sending messages from their Bluetooth PDAs to others in close range — not an especially useful feature, but quite fun. This is called ‘bluejacking’, and the first recorded instance of it was a man who sent a Bluetooth message to another man’s Nokia phone while they were in a bank together. What did the message say? ‘Buy Ericsson’.

Since then, it has become possible to send images by bluejacking, and it is widely believed to be the newest advertising medium — yes, it lets billboards send messages to your phone, a practice known as ‘bluecasting’. Whether you think that’s cool or annoying, of course, is your choice.

Here in the UK we’ve had laws dictating that you are not allowed to use your mobile phone whilst driving for a few years now, by and large most of us abide by this law and either use a Bluetooth car kit or simply don’t answer the call!

Over in the United State of America they have recently passed a similar law preventing people from using a mobile phone whilst driving too. Obviously much like over here in the UK there have been plenty of instances where police have had to pull over people flaunting this law, and they’ve received a ticket and probably a fine too. One such company, Aliph now has a specific page on their website where if you enter your ticket number and the state in which you received your ticket then you can look forward to a $20 discount. This discount is a welcome bonus for the company who makes fashionable minimalist headsets.

Bluetooth headsets are fairly common here in the UK with many business types and drivers seen seemingly talking to no one but in fact talking on their mobile phones via a Bluetooth headset. It looks as if Bluetooth headsets may now become one of the latest fashion accessories over in the USA. This can only mean good things for road safety which has already seen the number of minor collisions fall since the law was introduced.

Bluetooth headsets don’t even have to be expensive extras with some contracts and pay as you go sellers are offering mobile phone deals including a free Bluetooth headset to entice new customers to sign up. Aside from expensive built in Bluetooth kits in your car, having a Bluetooth headset is probably going to be the cheapest solution to communicating on the move. Many headsets offer incredible noise cancellation meaning that the person on the other end will only hear you, not the car radio or the engine roaring.
